Another experiment on the manipulation of memory and how quickly it changes, disappears when we look at photographs over and over again. These short films will be next to my archive and paper work but still fulfiiling them. That's how I picture the exhibition at this moment.

I don't consider this as something already finished. It's more of a sketch. I think that these images will work better on print for my project (picture below). For my personal interpretation of the train this would work, but that's another story for another time.

It shows the process of the manipulation and the reviewing of a photograph over and over again by putting a black canvas between the manipulations. The image is manipulated by scanner and camera. Like others before, this is also an experiment. Later on I will post a short film. This one's a paper version of this film. Here's the cover, beginning image and last image shown.

To make clear that a photograph changes a story, a memory or to fulfill a photograph by putting it in another perspective. A wall full with breathing pictures as if they were family portraits could work for the 'Master Open'.

Sinds de vorige presentatie ben ik bezig met de oogbewegingen en herinneringen. Het gegeven dat oogbewegingen een middel voor gedachtenlezen kan zijn, in combinatie met de herinneringen die verhalen worden omdat ons brein om de 7 jaar vernieuwt van cellen, is momenteel een uitgangspunt. De combinatie of eigenlijk tegenstelling van waarheid (realiteit) en fictie (droom) lijkt me een interessante grens om af te tasten. Vanuit dit standpunt ging ik de oogbewegingen bekijken. Als men visuele herinneringen ophaalt, kijkt men naar boven. Deze positie van het oog kan veranderen als men bijvoorbeeld liegt, of denkt de waarheid te vertellen terwijl men eigenlijk niet zeker is. Hier zie ik al zeker een mogelijkheid in om dit grafisch te visualiseren en de lezer dit fysiek te laten beleven. Het idee is een "visuele geheugendetector". Afgeleid van de leugendetectors en hun grafieken kwam ik op het idee om deze grafieken om te zetten in beeld, als zijnde het visuele brein. Een artistiek project dat ervoor zorgt conflicten beter op te lossen omdat beeld een grotere zeggingskracht kan hebben dan woord. Ik zou bekende beelden uit de maatschappij kunnen gebruiken omdat dat voor iedereen toegankelijk is en de privacy van de afgeluisterde niet schaadt. Deze zogezegde "geheugendetector" zou wel fictief zijn natuurlijk maar het leek me een goed platform voor de vraag : Waar zit de grens tussen waarheid en fictie in ons visuele brein?

What I've learned while analysing this photoalbum of mine, is that memories are based on photography and making stories about them. Without them the memory wouldn't be so present as it is now. Sure there are images that seem familiar but actually there brand new to you. The things that I recognized the most were objects, things I wore or used as a kid. Situations were often very vague. Expressions of known faces were confidential although the picture is new. I marked the things I knew in yellow, situations that were blank to me in charcoal and new things in red.

The first image reminded me of the scheduling we do in life. Memories put in place.

As I'm working along I am working from different angles. I know it is far to much to consider but while I'm working I know I'm getting somewhere. Hopefully some good ideas will grow out of it. I'm trying some things on interpretations, imagination, symbolic truth, drugs (geting away of all the rules), mouvement of the eye, contradictions, selective memory, automation. In between these subjects I'm trying to find links and ideas.

I'm also trying some automatic drawings. Automation is about putting something on paper or on a canvas or whatever. Without thinking you develop, you make. I find it very interesting to link with the visual brain. The things you make, are they refreshingly new or are they memories stored up in your unconsciousness?

Matt Mullican, That Person's Workbook

This book was shown at a presentation from Luc Derycke. A very nice Graphic Designer who made this book with Matt Mullican. It's a collection about his work that he made while he was under hypnosis. It's seen from a different angle but definetly approaches the theme of my project.

First I thought that I should know the scientific background of the visual brain before I start analysing it myself in a graphic way. As many of you must know, light comes through our eyes, searches its way through different channels. For colour, movement, form there's a different channel. Every channel splits into many other channels to process the information. The visual cortex is at the back of our head. We know the information gets there by cells that spread the information by little attachments between each other. How the information comes together isn't discovered yet.

I decided that it's important to know this but I don't want it to be the primary subject of my research. Further on I will go on about how society reflects on this.

Beeldend experiment: het visuele brein versus de maatschappij.

Psychologische kijk op het visuele brein en hoe deze in contact staat met beelden/ervaringen die we dagelijks beleven.

My internship is over. Tomorrow I will pick up my work and prepare for the presentation. But before I do this, I wanted to post a couple of pictures which got me going again. Because it was very busy at the internship I couldn't do much creative things for myself. Until I got in the train one day and the light was just perfect.

My masterproject is about the visuals/images of the brain. And how they are connected with images we see every day in society. It's about visuals and the notion.

This weekend I saw a reading of Noortje Wiesbauer, Philosophy teacher at St. Lukas Antwerp. She introduced the first 'day of imagination'. For almost two hours she told us extremely interesting things but the thing I find most interesting and that's stuck in my head is that imagination is pushed away in a conservative society while imagination is one of the most natural en stimulating things you could do.

I'm also wondering: When we were babies and shortly after that in kindergarden, we were very creative, making things and imagining the next thing to do. When you are getting older this creativity can be more of a struggle. Some of us can't be creative at all. Is it because of society?

Right now I'm doing my internship at Tim Van Steenbergen. A fantastic fashion designer. When my internship is over, I'll post some work.
